Teachers Targeted

Education recruitment agencies would be aware that the education sector is about to have a shake up. Education Secretary Mike Russell has announced that it has been 10 years since the last Teacher review and it is about time there was a new review.

10 years ago the McCrone report gave teachers a 23% wage rise and other benefits. The latest review will look at wages, conditions and whether the current circumstances can deliver the Curriculum.

Labour has already attacked this measure as a way for the Coalition to examine and reduce expenditure in this area and so more than likely look at ways of reducing the wages bill, be it through decreasing salaries or having less staff.

I believe that it of course makes sense to review conditions and I appreciate why the government would be looking at education. I do worry though that because they are intent on cutting costs everywhere, that they could almost become trigger happy and lose sight of what the service is meant to be providing.

AGR shows Graduate Recruitment market up

Graduate recruitment agencies would have been pleased to hear that the Association of Graduate Recruiters showed that vacancies rose last year by 9%. This represents the first year on year increase since the recession has started.

There is of course a flip side to this, that although there has been an increase, salaries have remained static for the last 3 years. What does this mean? Well it all depends if Lord Browne gets his wishes with tuition fees, if he does get his way this will mean huge increase in fees, which could have a domino effect in the market.

One thing for sure is that many employers actually and understandably cut too many jobs in the height of the recession, this would explain why so many employers have opened there doors to graduates again especially as they now can have the pick of bunch on a low salary basis. What the future holds will depend on many factors, the state of the economy of course being one of them and also the Browne review.

Royal college of Nursing gives warning

The royal college of nursing has given a warning that up to 27,000 nursing roles could be lost as part of the new cost saving schemes being put into action within the NHS.

Nurses recruitment agencies are expecting a flurry of registrations as the plans to axe 10 strategic health authorities and 152 primary care trusts gets underway. This action in itself will affect 60,000 managers and probably many other roles within the NHS.

The uncertainty by many is that will these drastic changes save the kind of money required and what kind of an affect this will have on the services of the NHS. The changes don’t even stop there with the possibility of NHS Professionals a government run job agency, being sold off, which currently fills 50000 shift workers.

We will of course have to see how these changes pan out, hoping that they prove to be the right ones not just for the economy but for the NHS running of the NHS.

Finance jobs on the decrease

It was not good news for financial recruitment agencies over the festive period, based on the quarterly survey from CBI (the employers’ group) and Pricewaterhouse.

The figures showed that jobs in this sector dropped at its fastest rate for 17 years and actually represented some 30,000 less job roles. This is on the back of quite good growth in this area however the understanding is that profitability has grown at a very slow rate and thus caused this effect.

It may be a sign of the times with many financial institutions being extremely cautious and do not want to overspend, by having less jobs and representing yourselves as being cautious it also allows for less demands on pay rises and bonuses that occur this time of the year.

VAT increase will affect jobs

The labour government leader Ed Mililband spoke at Oldham campaign centre about the VAT rise to 20%. The view was that the increase was too much too soon and instead of having the desired effect on the economy it will in fact be detrimental.

Recruitment agencies should expect an influx of job seekers on the back of this change as Ed Miliband predicted there could be as much as 250,000 job loses on the back of this. The 2.5% increase in VAT will cost families in general around £400 extra a year, Ed Miliband commented that this statement was made by Nick Clegg before the coalition was created.

Liberal democrat Tim Farron responded to this statement by saying that Ed Miliband, has spent his first 100 days in charge doing nothing, not even apologising for the mess this country is in due to the policies of Labour. The drastic measures need to be done to ensure that Britain can maintain economic stability and growth for the future.
