The affects of the immigration cap

The Immigration cap introduced after June’s budget has created a number of problems for recruitment agencies.  A recent survey carried out by de Poel stated that a third of the employment agencies have seen a seen a 25% drop in overseas staff.

The new rules which if effective will become permanent in April 2011, limit the number of overseas staff allowed to work in the UK. The affects of this has meant that there is a skills gap being produced. Already some City firms have complained that much of their business is done on a global scale and so hiring overseas staff is extremely important to keep there network running smoothly. Even scientist have moaned about these changes, Hinxtion Laboratory, based in Cambridge employs a number of overseas staff to ensure that there research is of the highest level, a recent statement from them claimed that these changes in immigration will have huge ramifications on their research and only a handful of top scientist will be allowed to stay in the UK.

These changes will also affect other areas such as Care and Manufacturing. From my point of view I do understand why these limits have been put into place, we are going through one of our largest unemployment rates in this country and so we should be recruiting from within. However there is a fine line that we cannot have businesses unable to operate to their expectations in this country as we will be dependant on the private sector to get us out of the recession and upsetting them too much might force them to operate elsewhere.

It has been suggested in some quarters that the migration system should have limits but not at the expense of economic recovery, a system that compliments this would be ideal.

Recruitment agencies needed

A new study has shown that on average there are 4 unemployed people to every job vacancy.

This revelation represents quite a troublesome future, with Unison stating this spells danger and that the government has only acted on reducing the debt but not put any provisions on growth and recovery.

The belief here is that dole queues will increase and millions of families will be affected with taxpayers picking up the bill.

Recruitment agencies are of course trying to fill as many of these vacancies as possible but the truth is, is that there are not enough jobs and in some places you have 31 unemployed people going for the same job.

My view is that `yes` we are in for a hard time but the only thing that gives me encouragement is that if we can get this country profitable sooner rather than later we might be in a prime position to increase even further our Global presence whilst other countries lag behind with debt.

Well I have to try and find some kind of positive….

Jobs decreasing for IT contractors

IT Recruitment Agencies would have seen a drop in demand for Temps last month as the Recruitment and Employment Confederations issued the index for IT Contractors at 51.7 a drop from 56.4.

This is a sign of the times as the cut backs made from the public sector have had an effect on IT Contractors. This was also shown with the fact that number of available contractors rose in September and also a drop in hourly pay rate.

The 2 other areas that have decreased more than IT, is nursing and medical temps. Whilst Engineering, Construction and Executive staff have come into demand.

Financial recruitment agencies post profits

Financial recruitment agencies got a boost from two of the larger agencies Hays Recruitment and Michael Page, with there quarterly figures both increasing in this sector.

Michael Page showed a healthy increase of 37% on its gross profits and in the UK showed a 20.9% increase. Michaela Page also increased its head count to 333.

Hays also showed a healthy increase in Europe this was a 24% increase and the rest of the world showed a 27% increase. Although the UK only represented a 1% increase it is still a step in the right direction.

These reports are of course encouraging and are good sign for the growth in the private sector, with private sector in general on the rise. This does come with an air of caution especially from the UK front, where new fiscal policies will start to take effect, however most people think these changes will be more damning on the public sector rather than the private sector.

Jobs showing signs of double dip

Recruitment agencies especially healthcare recruitment agencies were highlighted in the news today by a report issued by KPMG in conjunction with the Recruitment Employment Confederation.

The findings in this report were echoed by Kevin Green, the REC,s chief executive,. Who warned that the jobs market is shown to be heading for a double dip.

In more detail the private sector looks to have flat lined, with its slowest growth for over a year. Whilst public sector recruitment has had the reality of the emergency budget finally sinking in, with large falls in demand across all public sectors, mainly healthcare workers within the NHS.

Accountants from KPMG have warned that a close eye has to be kept on the unemployment rate that currently stands at 2.47 million, that recently showed signs of improving but in light of this latest report would be no surprise if began to increase again.

My thoughts on this matter, is that this was expected, it was very hard to imagine with the emergency budget that it would not have these kind of results. We should also note that during the height of the recession the public sector was hardly affected due to the backing it had from the government. I do however view, especially in the NHS case, that spending freezes have almost gone past the point of requirement even affecting frontline services and so believe that this needs to be addressed sooner rather than later.

Boots Headquarters at centre of job cuts

Retail recruitment agencies are again hearing unfavourable news from the retail industry. This time Boots has announce plans to cut 900 jobs from its manufacturing and supply chain.

The news differs from the promises made by private equity firm KKR in 2007, that Boots headquarters in Nottingham will remain at the centre of there business structure. However the chief executive of Alliance Boots, claimed that this was only completing the task of merging Alliance and Boots in 2006, there had to be some time given and then the business had to be streamlined.

Boots maintains transparency in their structure and although the GMB Union seeks to have talks with Boots about the planned redundancies. The fact is that only 150 of the planned redundancy are from their manufacturing section, the majority are in fact white collar workers that don’t subscribe to the Union.

Boots Alliance employs 70,000 people in the UK and maintain that they will not be making cuts from there retail stores. The good news is that Boots showed pretax profits of £475m in the year to the end of March, up £13m from previous year. Therefore this does highlight the fact that these cuts could very much be a genuine streamlining process from the merging of Alliance and Boots.
