Which Recruitment Agency?

When people ask me which recruitment agencies they should use I often say that it is not as simple as saying `that one`. There are now an abundance of employment agencies that cater for many different skill sets and these agencies have a wealth of knowledge of what is happening in their sectors.

You could base your decision on location of agency, accreditations the agency may have, if they mainly deal with permanent placements or do they provide temping opportunities, what contracts do they have in place and quality of service provided. It all depends on what the individual wants out of the recruitment agency they use, some may prefer the personal touch and really get to know the consultant others may prefer agencies which have many contracts in place.

Although agencies operate very differently the overall standard of how an employment agency works has improved over the years. To the point that many will have in depth knowledge of their sectors and it doesn’t surprise me to hear that many consultants know more about their sector than people that work in that sector.

Therefore although I could not give you advice about which agency is right for you as a lot is based on personal preference, my advice will however be always use a recruitment agency when looking for work. They have the knowledge, the contacts and the understanding to find the right job for you.

Union warns 1000’s of NHS jobs will go

A Union has spoken about there thoughts of what is happening or what will happen to the NHS over the coming years, with the health service asked to find £20 billion in efficiency savings it is estimated that 5,600 jobs are at risk.

Healthcare recruitment agencies are of course concerned by these predictions, but the reality of the situation is that although party politicians will endeavour to convince the public that NHS spending will continue at the same rate and that services will not suffer. The feedback being received from the trust themselves is that cuts have already begun and that services have already felt the strain of this.

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN), released its data showing that cuts were a reality and happening across the country. Nurses employment agencies will be aware that cuts are mainly happening in these frontline services as 40% of hospitals are banned from using bank or agency nurses. In fact many hospitals are operating with 13% fewer staff than required and 49% of the hospitals have had a recruitment freeze.

The RCN also wanted a discussion that will highlight ways that cost savings can be done through better use of resources rather than sacrificing frontline services, the problem is party leaders have not explained there proposed way to save on spending and still have an effective health service and unfortunately until this is openly discussed we can only presume they are not to sure themselves.

I do agree with the RCN that a lot of money is wasted within the NHS on resources and in fact you do not have to go too far back to find an example of this. In 2003 it was agreed that the NHS was going to spend £2.3 billion on a new computer system, the truth of the matter is, is that this system was incorrectly budgeted for and it’s real cost is believed to be nearer the £20 billion mark. I could not imagine a business surviving on these kind of budget predictions so I can only imagine what state the NHS is. I believe that there is a certain amount of simplicity in care and that is to have qualified staff looking after the people that need it, everything else is secondary in terms of trying to streamline this service. I of course understand why there is a need to save on spending within the NHS but it seems to me that a lot can be saved in other areas of its operation.

Tesco hopes to create 16,000 new jobs

The supermarket giant has announced a boost in profits by up to 10%, which equates to £3.4 billion. This has meant an expansion strategy is being implemented to help open 750 stores worldwide with 245 stores in the UK.

Retail recruitment agencies are keeping a close eye on the situation as Tesco hopes to create 900 new jobs in the UK alone. Sir Terry Leahy, who is in charged of Tesco’s said that the increase happened partly due to incentives for buyers during the recession, such as discounts and improved loyalty schemes. Sir Leahy also went on to say that they hope to cash in with The World Cup, this is always a great revenue stream, especially if the weather is good and England progress in the competition.

The recession seems to have benefited Tesco’s, not only from more people staying home to eat rather than going out for a meal, but from the local authorities making it easier to open new stores to therefore create more jobs.

When Sir Leahy was asked about how the grounded flights have affected the transportation of products, he did say it had some affect by re routing a lot of their Kenya flights but it mainly affected staff.

Public sector jobs at risk

Public sector recruitment agencies were stunned by the prediction of the Charted Institute of Personnel and Development. They stated that out of the 5.8 million people that work for the public sector, that as much as 10% may lose their jobs by 2015.

John Philpott, chief economic advisor for the CIPD, has said that the political parties do not really address how they will tackle UK debt problem and that in his view the public spending squeeze will be much greater than what the political parties are prepared to admit. He added that comments such as reducing spending through reduced wages and short-time working is very misleading and probably far of the mark of how the UK will cope with this deficit.

John philpott also said that he did not support the Conservative view of making immediate cuts and that this kind of action could have an adverse affect but did support the Conservative’s view of reversing the planned labour national insurance contributions increase in 2011, which was described as a `Tax on Jobs`

Employment agencies will take a cautious view of the public sector and will try to anticipate which areas the jobs will be more at risk. What is for sure though is that whoever wins the next General Election, will be judged mainly by their ability to tackle the UK’s deficit.

City Jobs on the increase

Employment agency Astbury Marsden has issued its findings on the status of city jobs in the first quarter of 2010. The statistics show a very healthy 120% increase in the number of vacancies.

That is an increase from 4970 in Q1 of 2009 to 11,020 roles in Q1 of 2010. Therefore they have predicted a 26% increase in City Jobs in 2010 to 53,000 vacancies.

Other financial recruitment agencies such as Ambition, have made similar predictions. Stating that they believe financial vacancies in the city will reach the levels of 2007 by the end of 2010, this is based on the growth of the equities market.

This is shown as well by the FTSE that has shown continue rise recently as bankers and brokers buy into equities, which in turn has led to these companies demanding more staff.

Permanent jobs on the increase

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation and KPMG report on jobs shows that a number of people placed in permanent jobs in March, was the sharpest rise since October 1997. The report also showed that temporary placements also increased sharply and this was its fastest rise for nearly 3 years.

This is good news for recruitment agencies, especially IT employment agencies, with this sector showing particular strength. There was also an increase in the Public-sector, which has shown growth every quarter since 1998.

Head of business services at KPMG, Bernard Brown, stated that although the private sector did show signs of confidence returning to the market, it was the public sector that caused most of the increase and so with the impending tightening of public spending that will occur, we should expect that this sector will drop over the coming months.
