London Recruitment Agencies involved in Boris plans

Boris Johnson the Mayor of London has now announced his employment strategy for London and includes the use of London Recruitment Agencies.

The revised scheme which is entitled `From Recession to Recovery`, wants to utilise as many resources as possible to help with job seekers finding jobs. This can of course happen on a number of levels, but Boris Johnson wanted the input of recruitment agencies and therefore worked closely with the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC).

Cathy Richardson from the REC said that recruitment agencies are key partners in helping people get back to work and that we are seeing more agencies work closely with Jobcentres, which is beneficial on a local level.

The steps taken by the scheme will hopefully provide a more insightful understanding of the state of the London job market and give clues on how best to tackle it, especially youth unemployment which has risen quite sharply from this recession.

Recruitment agencies welcome clampdown on City bonuses

Recruitment agencies working in the City are taking the news of Bonus clampdowns rather well. The situation is now that most state owned banks are trying to reduce or remove any kind of bonus structure, which means that most employees are looking to jump ship to a company in the private sector. This is good news for banking recruitment agencies, who are dependant on the movement of staff, rather than the total of staff currently working.

The added benefit is that most companies are working on higher basic packages rather than bonus packages, which for recruitment agencies such as Robert Walters is again good news. This is because they work on a percentage fee of the basic package and not on bonuses.

Robert Walters also announced that they expect to break even this year, which is better than the £2 million pre-tax loss they originally forecast. This is due largely to the fact that many overestimated the recession and so many banks are now rehiring and also by the fact that Robert Walters themselves reduced overheads to combat the downturn.

2010 therefore looks like it is starting in the right direction and recruitment agencies will hopefully have turned a corner in the financial sector and see a rise in activity.

Travel vacancies on the increase

Recruitment agencies in the travel sector are showing more positive signs from employers, with many agencies showing an increase in job vacancies, almost double the amount there were in January 2009.

Travel trade recruitment, sales director, Claire Muge said that the main affected area of the recession was business travel, which they are now seeing an improvement in. Also since September this year they have also noticed tour operators requiring more staff. This all paints a positive picture for 2010 and hopefully this increase in vacancies continues.

In fact a problem that has been highlighted is the fact that so many workers left the travel industry that the numbered of skilled workers is a lot less and so this may result in not enough skilled workers to fill the continued rise in vacancies.

Travel recruitment agencies are pleased with the green shoots of recovery and hope this growth spurt is not short lived.

Monster European Recruitment index increased in November

Monster Employment Index, rose to 100 from 99 in November, a 1 point increase, which followed the 1 point increase in October. The index which is considered to be a good employment indicator, evaluates online jobs on corporate websites.

The increase was mainly attributed to a slight rise in employee demand in the creative and marketing and media sectors. This combined with the view that the decline in job vacancies has reached the bottom, means that confidence is beginning to build in the market.

The value of 100 was the same value as in 2005, however a lot less than last year when it was 146. With growth trends showing mainly in the UK and Sweden, Hugo Sellert, Monster’s head of economic research, expects other European countries to follow this trend.

For recruitment agencies this is a positive sign and could mean in 2010 it will be a much more promising year. With many companies being quite reserved in their spending in 2009, they may be ready to expand in 2010. This will be expected for Oil & Gas, where candidates are applying to Oil & Gas Recruitment Agencies in abundance at present with only a few jobs available, however with rising Oil prices and new Oil sites found, even this sector is hoping for goods things in 2010.

Lets` just hope everyone gets what they want for Christmas and the New Year!!!

Plimsoll analyse UK recruitment industry

Market analyst Plimsoll has issued their research on UK recruitment industry over the last 12 months. Their findings show that £1.8 billion lost profits compared to the year before, which is quite staggering.

Plimsoll Analysis of recruitment agencies found that roughly half of the recruitment agencies they analysed had their profit margins reduced dramatically. This was a direct result of the recession as many agencies could not charge the kind of fees they could before.

However the other half of the recruitment agencies did extremely well. With many showing increased in profits and growth, which shows that even in current time’s recruitment agencies can still blossom.

Recruitment agencies must work closely with Employers

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) published “the gateway to success – recruitment 2020 white paper” which outlined how recruitment agencies and employers should work more closely to tackle employment challenges.

With skills becoming more varied and a variety of job opportunities, it is the case that recruitment agencies cannot just be a c.v. factory but understand the employers requirements and source relevant candidates only. Employers are looking for value for money and if a recruitment agency does a proper job, employers know that recruitment agencies can be essential in finding good candidates.

Anita Holbrow told Personnel Today that employers should embrace recruitment agencies as a strategic partnership so to get the best talent.

With the internet being used more and more to find candidates by employers, recruitment agencies do have to look at there service differently and offer a service that employers would otherwise struggle to do themselves.
