Summer Jobs in low demand

The National Union of Students Scotland has voiced their concerns about the lack of summer jobs there is for undergraduates.

With many graduates leaving University in thousand of pounds worth of debt, summer placements were a good way to release the burdens of debt. The problem is the recession has meant many employers who would otherwise take on undergraduates are no longer doing so and the repercussions of this is becoming more and more evident.

The Scottish Government report, states that on average students build up about £1,300 in commercial debt. The NUS claims when you add this commercial debt to the government loans, you are in effect in about £16,000 debt.

This is an extremely large figure for graduates to manage, however what The Student Loans Company stated is that due to additional work and summer jobs the actual debt a graduate has, is in the region of £5,300, a much more manageable figure.

Liam Burns, president of the NUS in Scotland said “we have serious concerns about students getting into even further commercial debt and debt they can’t manage, ultimately that will mean students will start dropping out”

Car industry finally gets a welcome boost

Nissan have announced plans to invest £200m to build batteries for electric cars which in turn will create at least 350 jobs.

Gordon Brown and Lord Mandelson visited the firm’s plant in Sunderland, which is now also a contender to manufacture the electric vehicles. This is the same plant which was forced to shed 1,200 jobs in January as it tried to cope with the recession hit motor industry.

The Government has acted on this by creating a training centre to specialise in the up keep of ultra-low carbon vehicles. With the scheme including 750 charging points being installed across the North East.

This is a significant announcement as not only is this beneficial in the short term, it is also a welcome boost for the long term objective for a greener environment.

The prime minister was quoted as saying: “I know as a country we face challenges. The question often asked of me is where are the jobs of the future going to come? People are answering that question here at Nissan today.”

If you are looking for more information about the motoring job market then it is good to speak to Motoring Recruitment Agencies.

Recruitment agencies called upon to help with Swine Flu pandemic

Healthcare recruitment agencies are being called into action this week with many Out of Hours services unable to cope with the amount of phone calls NHS Direct is receiving. On average, Out of Hours calls have increased 3 fold and General Practitioners are claiming to be ill informed on the procedures of Swine Flu, Tammiflu and how long patients should stay at home.

Swine Flu is taking all the headlines at the moment with Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson making startling claims that if 30% of the population got Swine Flu, then a possible 65,000 people could die from the virus. This is of course worst case scenario but represents roughly 1 in every 300.

The World Health Organisation is currently set at phase 5 out of a possible 6 phases on the scales of seriousness of Swine Flu as a global pandemic, there is a real possibility that this could move to a phase 6. The main concern with Swine Flu is that whilst other flu viruses in the past would affect the elderly, this virus seems to cause serious health problems to young people as well.

There are plans to open up a National Pandemic Flu Service which will be manned by 2000 call centre staff, with the intention of identifying and dealing with these cases as quick as possible.

Recruitment agencies are being called upon to help out in this period, providing support and healthcare staff where needed.

To be or not to be a Graduate

Now that is the question that many have today. The Association of Graduate Recruiters has done a survey of its 226 members and has come up with some intriguing stats.

The 226 members are intending to recruit 12,650 graduates in 2009, far less than hoped for and with all sectors showing a drop except for energy and utilities, it represents a startling fact. There are 25% fewer jobs for graduates compared to the last recruitment round. This means that for every graduate job that exist, there are 48 graduates chasing it, it is almost like a lottery if a graduate will even get a job. Graduate salaries have also frozen, with the average graduate wage being £25,000. Questions are now being asked is if all the years of studying and debt, worth it?

Carl Gilleard, chief executive of AGR said that it is a valuable asset to have a degree and explained that the drop in vacancies was expected with such a recession and will probably be the same next year to.

Tesco and Pricewater House have both come out and said that there is no change to there graduate recruitment drive and believe that this is an integral part of maintaining their services. I recently wrote a blog “keep hiring graduates, think long term”, which explained that it could cost employers more in the long run by having gaps in the experience of their employees.

I feel that, it is very difficult to judge employers through this harsh period and when there are cost cutting exercises needing to ensure the survival of a company then stopping graduate recruitment schemes is far better than a company collapsing. However it is also clear that if a company can afford to continue to carry out these schemes then they will be in a much favourable position in the near future.

I suppose to answer the initial question, to be or not to be a graduate is quite clear to me. No student, graduates for a 2 – 3 year job, they graduate to have a career and this can always be achieved. Recessions will come and go, but if you wish to have a career, then it is obvious that a degree will give a good base to build on.

To enquire about graduate jobs it is always good to speak to graduate recruitment agencies.
