Hire staff and we will pay for it!

This amazing deal was announced by the Scottish Government as there groundbreaking vision of increasing one of their core markets.

Over the last few years Scotland and specifically Dundee have gained a reputation in Life Sciences and they encourage these companies to set their roots in Scotland. Life Science companies employs more than 30,000 people in Scotland and contributes £2.8 billion to its economy.

First Minister Alex Salmond, announced that the government will support up to 100 apprentices in the sector through a £3 million funding boost. This will be done on a 2 for 1 basis, so that when a company hire 2 apprentices, then the government will pay the way of the second apprentice. This move hopes to add more resources to an influential sector and increase even further the scope that Life Sciences play in Scotland. The wider aim of this scheme is to have 7,800 apprenticeships within a year.

Christina Potter, the Principal of Dundee College, said that the development of science skills is critical to the financial health of Scotland and, in particular, here in Dundee.

Also the education secretary, Fiona Hyslop added that this initiative will help this sector to grow.

Recruitment agencies will have more information and a better understanding of routes into life sciences and so recommend speaking to scientific recruitment agencies.

Keep hiring graduates, think long term.

This is the message from Stephanie Bird, a board member of European Association of People Management. Stephanie has said that it is more effective to build now with graduates rather than pay for it later on.

The point Stephanie is making is a very valid one, in that if your company strategy has always been taking on graduates, then you will have a constant stream of progressing staff, that build up knowledge and skills over the years. Stopping this conveyer belt as such will only create a gap in your staffing structure and so your cost effective solution in the short term could be an expensive problem in the long term by paying for staff to fill that gap of experience and knowledge.

Graduates play a key part in growing an economy, they have spent years training themselves mentally for the job market and to actually prevent them from entering the job market penalises the economy. I believe these are the kind of workers which will have the most energy and drive to bring the UK out of the recession and I hope that companies listen to Stephanie Bird and continue to take on graduates.

For more information in this area you should speak to Graduate Recruitment Agencies, these are the consultants that will have a good understanding of the graduate market.

The recession has ended! Has it?

The National Institute of Economic and Social Research has claimed that the UK economy has in fact grown over the last couple of months. There figures have represented a 0.1% growth in May and a 0.2% growth in April, this is compared to a 0.5% drop in March.

The Office for National Statistics showed that industrial production also rose by 0.4% over March and April.

Therefore can we start to say the recession has ended? I would not like to dampen such positive statistics and of course welcome such results, but I think it is too early to start claiming the end of the recession. The hard truth is that unemployment figures are set to reach 3 million by next year and although we are starting to see green shoots appear nationwide, this recovery will be a very much long drawn out process.

Some recruitment agencies are starting to find confidence in the market again and I believe it is the recruitment agencies that are the best people to speak to, as they are on the front line of the job market.

It will be interesting to see how the second half of the year pans out, when many predict in this period the fiscal changes such as interest rates will take full effect and further help the economy.

Where are all the Psychiatrists??

Britain is facing a huge shortage of psychiatrists and has to rely on overseas doctors to be able to maintain a service.

In some cases it has been questioned how suitable these overseas doctors are, as a key aspect of psychiatry is to understand the surroundings the person is from. This is difficult to analyse if you have very little knowledge of Britain as a whole.

Prof Robert Howard, Dean of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCP) told channel 4 news “Catastrophic is the word I would use for the shortage we are now facing. We have always struggled to recruit significant numbers but this year is particularly acute.”

Around 400-500 psychiatry posts have to be filled each year within the NHS, this number is set to increase and the majority of overseas doctors that come to fill these positions are from India and West Africa.

Prof Dinesh Bhugra, president of the RCP, told Channel 4 news “The message to UK graduates is that this is most exciting and fun speciality in medicine. Where else would you use cinema, theatre, literature, neurosciences, psychology, sociology and anthropology to pull it all together? But a lot students and junior doctors are being put off for various reasons.”

One of those reasons is the misconception that mental problems is incurable, however psychiatrists have a real role to play in society in getting people back to work, keeping people out of the justice system or just assessing their risk. A psychiatrist also has real relationships with their patients and often offers real rewards and job satisfaction.

A spokeswomen from the department of health said they are working closely with the RCP to improve recruitment of psychiatrists in the UK and get the message out there.

Psychiatrist recruitment agencies are always a good source of knowledge in letting people understand the rewards from working in this kind of field.
